NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A Rikers Island correction officer was injured during a stabbing at the jail Monday afternoon, authorities said.

The incident happened around 4:45 p.m. at the Anna M. Kross Center where the officer was stabbed 15 times, according to officials.

He was taken to NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst where he is in stable condition.

"The Executive Board and I are with the officer at the hospital, who is conscious and undergoing tests,” Correction Officer Benevolent Association President Benny Boscio said in a statement. “I want to thank Mayor Adams and Commissioner Molina for also visiting the officer tonight. "

In a statement to ABC 7, DOC Commissioner Louis Molina called the attack heinous and unprovoked.

"We will not tolerate any assaults on our Members of Service who show up to work each day to keep our jails safe," Molina said. "We are rearresting the individual who committed this deplorable attack. We are praying for this officer to make a speedy recovery."
