Swedish ice hockey legend Börje Salming passes away at 71

  • One of Swedish ice hockey's all time greats, Börje Salming, has passed away after a battle with the motor neurone disease ALS. He was 71.

  • Börje Salming moved from Kiruna to Gävle and the Brynäs team early on in his career, where he was part of two Swedish ice hockey championship winning teams. But it was at the NHL team the Toronto Maple Leafs that he made the biggest impression.

  • He played for the club from 1973 to 1989, and was a Swedish pioneer in the North American ice hockey league, the NHL. He was the first Swede voted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1996.
