As I said yesterday, Pinterest is a snowball.
Those that get that - and WORK that - have the most success with Pinterest.
If you make one pin image and pin it on Pinterest, sure you might get some traffic to your post.
BUT, if you don't give those visitors something ELSE to pin FROM your post, you are REALLY missing out on the pure magic of Pinterest.
Let me back up a few steps here and try and explain this differently.
Have you ever stood in line at the grocery store?
(I'm gonna bet that answer is yes)
So you're standing in line, waiting your turn to checkout... what do you SEE while you're waiting?
Yep, ALL those candy bars and snacks
(soooo tempting! I LOVE Fast Break candy bars!)
But what else do you see while standing in line?
Magazines?
Yes, MAGAZINES.
You glance at them.... perhaps you pick one up to flip through while you wait?
I do.
Ever wonder WHY you picked that particular magazine up?
It might have been a magazine you know you like...
OR...
There was something on the COVER of that magazine that caught your attention...
something that interested you enough to pick the magazine up and open it.
Pins are like that.
Something on the pin catches the attention of those that see it.
Something that interests THEM enough to CLICK on it.
Now I'm gonna show my age (bless my heart haha!)
Back in the "good ol' days", we'd see a magazine that interested us, open it, and then tear out specific articles or recipes or decor ideas that WE liked.... and SAVE them.
Think about that...
Now, relate that to Pinterest.
Your pins they see in their Home Feed (or in Pinterest search results) are your Magazine COVER.
Once they click through, are you giving them anything to "tear out and save"?
People really don't save magazine COVERS...
but they DO save ideas from INSIDE the magazine.
Give them things to save (ie, to Pin)
The MOST valuable pins you will have are Pins that OTHERS have pinned from your posts.
Not REpins....
The BEST pins are "Discovered pins" that are "live pinned" from your post from a Pinterest account that is NOT YOUR blog's Pinterest account.
Period. Full stop. End of sentence.
(go ahead, go back and RE-read that above - it's IMPORTANT - I'll wait)
You can pin your fingers to the bone, but unless OTHER pinners can discover OTHER images IN YOUR POST to pin, you will have a hard time maximizing your traffic from Pinterest.
I have multiple Pinterest accounts...
Each blog has their own account and I have a personal Pinterest account.
(please tell me you also have a PERSONAL Pinterest account too, right? That's another BIG hint)
When I open up my Pinterest analytics, most of the BEST performing pins I have are pins I've pinned to OTHER sites.
And that is true on ALL my Pinterest accounts.
And I'm totally good with that.
Why?
It's what Pinterest LIKES... so I give Pinterest what it likes =)
And, in return, Pinterest gives ME what *I* like - TRAFFIC.
Now, let me take this one step further -
(and thanks for hanging in here with me!)
The BEST pins are "Discovered pins" -
- that are considered fresh new pin images -
- that are pinned from a Pinterest account that is NOT YOUR blog's Pinterest account.
In other words...
I go to your blog post, make a NEW and UNIQUE pin for that post and pin it to MY Pinterest account.
It's what I do...
WHY?
Because It Works.
(and I REALLY love DOING it)
I'm putting together a short Google Doc for you that shows what I do...
Shows my stats... my results... WHY it works... etc, etc etc
Hopefully, it will be in your inbox tomorrow.
Ok, let's move on... we'll talk about that later.
Pinterest has become more of a "share what you FOUND" type of platform -
as opposed to a "share what you HAVE" type of platform.
ACTION STEPS FOR TODAY:
Check your Analytics and find your best performing pins / posts from Pinterest.
REALLY look at your posts -
Are you giving those visitors something to save (ie, pin) that's helpful for THEM?
They helped YOU by clicking your pin and visiting your blog...
(which means - your pin worked - yay!)
What are you giving them, image-wise, to save?
The magic of the Pinterest Snowball happens when users click your pins, end up on your post, and THEN....
Pin something ELSE from your post.
(fresh, LIVE pins tend to reset stats and start a NEW snowball - also a HUGE hint)
What can YOU do differently, or additionally, to help capitalize on that?
Tomorrow, we're going to talk about a little trick I use to "round up" my own pins...
It works REALLY well...
and it's really FUN to do too!
Until tomorrow -
Jennifer ~PotPieGirl
PS - I've had SO many wonderful sweet emails today welcoming me back, saying they've missed me, etc.
THANK YOU!
I am beyond humbled...
and really kinda giddy about it.
I've missed being "here" - thank you all SO much for your kindness!
I've also had many questions that pretty much go like this:
Hey Jennifer - I know your training guides are a bit "dated", but are any of your guides still totally relevant to help me do better with my blog?
The answer is YES!
Here are 2 of my guides you will probably find very helpful:
1. My Niche Post Conversion Strategies guide is still VERY relevant to what ALL bloggers do
(and and for bloggers who want to do BETTER - which is the whole point of this guide)
2. My 10 Step Blog Post Improvement Plan is also still VERY helpful and relevant.
I still use my own strategies from ALL my guides all the time.
Why?
Simple - because they work!
If you're curious:
See ALL my training guides here.
Otherwise, we'll talk again tomorrow.
