Vatican rejects doctrine that fuelled centuries of colonialism. The Vatican responded to Indigenous demands and formally repudiated the “Doctrine of Discovery.” The statement marked a historic recognition of the Vatican’s own complicity in colonial-era abuses committed by European powers. The theories were backed by 15th-century “papal bulls” that legitimized the colonial-era seizure of Native lands and form the basis of some property laws today.
ChatGPT is banned by Italian regulators in the country. Italy is the first Western country to prohibit the advanced chatbot ChatGPT. Authorities accused OpenAI of failing to verify the age of its ChatGPT users and of failing to enforce laws prohibiting users under the age of 13. These young users may be exposed to "unsuitable answers" from the chatbot.
Riyadh joins Shanghai Cooperation Organization as ties with Beijing grow. Saudi Arabia has approved a memorandum on granting the kingdom the status of a dialogue partner in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). The SCO is a political and security union of countries spanning much of Eurasia, including China, India and Russia.
World Court Rules US illegally froze some Iranian assets. In a partial victory for Iran, judges at the International Court of Justice ruled that the US illegally allowed courts to freeze assets of some Iranian companies and ordered the US to pay compensation, the amount of which will be determined later.
UN to start taking deep-sea mining applications. The International Seabed Authority will start accepting applications from companies that want to mine the ocean's floor. The UN body debated standards for the new and controversial practice.
Tunisia imposes water rationing. The government announced the country will begin implementing water rationing measures as the North African country is facing severe draught. The water restrictions will stay in place until September.
