Award-winning Melbourne musician Julian James dives deep into the spirit of Americana with his spirited new single, White Lightning. A high-energy celebration of roots and bluegrass, this track fuses Julian's signature whiskey-soaked sound with a powerhouse of musical talent, delivering a song destined to get toes tapping.

White Lightning will be released across all digital platforms on Saturday, March 1, 2025.

Produced by ARIA and multiple Golden Guitar award-winning Matt Fell, the track features a stellar lineup of collaborators. Pete Denahy, who once shared the stage with Australian country music legend Slim Dusty, lends his masterful fiddle to the track, while Hamish Davidson (Davidson Brothers) commands the banjo and mandolin with fiery finesse.

Says Julian: "There's something magical about bringing together such a talented group of musicians. With White Lightning, I wanted to honour the energy of bluegrass while giving it my own twist. Having Pete on the track, knowing he's played alongside Slim Dusty—an icon of Australian country music—makes this even more special."

The release of White Lightning follows the success of Julian's previous single, Catfish, a fresh and upbeat reimagining of the Muddy Waters classic Catfish Blues. The track was met with widespread acclaim, earning a spot on Joe Bonamassa's Cutting Edge Blues playlist and reaffirming Julian's place as a leading voice in modern blues and Americana.

Whether performing with his band, The Moonshine State, Julian's live shows have become synonymous with passion and raw energy.

Now, he takes to the road in duo mode with his wife, the vibrantly talented Beci Kate on percussion and backing vocals.

Award-winning Melbourne musician Julian James has taken the classic Muddy Waters tune, Catfish Blues and dialled up the arrangement to offer a fresh, upbeat Americana twist on the 1950 Delta blues track.

Re-naming his rendition simply as Catfish, the single will be released across all digital platforms on Friday, October 11, 2024.

Produced by the ARIA Award-winning Matt Fell, this track features the legendary Charlie Musselwhite on harmonica and backing vocals from the Hussy Hicks, with Fell on bass. With its dynamic new energy and innovative take on a blues classic, Catfish promises to breathe new life into a beloved favourite. Says Julian “Catfish has always been one of my favourite Muddy Waters songs. I wanted to give it my own spin and infuse it with my own energy.

“Having Charlie Musselwhite play on the track is a dream come true for me, especially since he’s played with Muddy Waters himself.”

Julian James has been around Melbourne’s live music scene since before he was allowed to drink in bars and has released four well-received albums to date, receiving a Chain Award for Emerging Blues Artist of the Year at the Australian Blues Festival in 2020.

Whether it’s with his band, The Moonshine State or as a solo artist, Julian’s shows have been known to embody a fusion of high-energy, whiskey -drenched Americana Hill country blues.

Emerging from Melbourne's famous music scene award winning artist Julian James has been cutting his teeth for the past 13 years at renowned festivals around Australia, both Solo and with a Chicago blues outfit.

After the success of his past two solo albums, countless tours and over 150,000kms around Australia, Julian has landed on a sound that draws from both a humming Louisiana back-porch swamp and roadhouse juke joint.

Joining forces with one of the industry's most proclaimed Americana producers Matt Fell, The album “Devil Town’ was created.
