The Yawning Gap (The Wanderers Cycle Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 94 ratings

"Highly recommended for fans of Patrick Rothfuss and Robert Jordan." -BlueInk Review (starred review)

A catastrophe a thousand years ago divided the world into isolated Fragments, eventually driving most of humanity back to a premodern lifestyle. Since then, an unexplained blight has been spreading, and strange and monstrous creatures have arisen in its midst.

Cor, the son of a whisky distiller, doesn't know about any of this. His peaceful little village has been isolated for hundreds of years—until he finds a way out, wandering into another Fragment. It's rather less peaceful. But with the help of Brayleigh—a spritely redhead teen he soon befriends, who is a bit wiser to the ways of the world—maybe our sheltered whisky stillman can survive and, in time, make his way back home.

Celeste has not been so sheltered. Her family was murdered by orks at age 8; she left the Academy at 18 to travel with a merchant caravan; and now, she's the orator for the new leader of the People's Commonwealth. Everything she's dreamt of is finally in reach ... so why does it feel farther away than ever?

Deliad, the Knight-Lord of Norvester—the former kingdom replaced by the Commonwealth—would like nothing better than to confront those responsible with the edge of his halberd, Celeste included. But, with his small band of former knights stuck hiding in remote hills and half-starving, it's looking increasingly unlikely he'll ever get the chance.

Nothing could be further from their minds than the workings of a Warlock a thousand miles away, and his obsessive decade-long pursuit of vengeance. Yet as fragmented as this world is, it's also a small one. Will the hand of vengeance reach them across a thousand miles? ... Or will they, perhaps, reach him first?

The Yawning Gap is the first book in what it promises to be a fantastic and thrilling fantasy series written by C.V. Vobh. I am an avid reader of fiction and fantasy but this book is one of a kind. What sets Vobh's storytelling apart is his masterful weaving of the personal journey and discoveries of the main character and his fellow wanderers into the larger context of the conflicting world they realise they live in. In doing so the writer creates a multi-layered universe that is full of tension, danger, and resilience. The descriptions of the events, landscapes, and people are vivid and detailed, allowing readers to fully immerse themselves in the world of the story. This book is a great example of a fantasy and adventure novel. It has all the elements that fans of the genre expect - magic, world-building, and non-stop action - while also being highly original and interesting. I highly recommend it.

It took a while to get i to the story given the unusual setting painted by the author. However, once you were used to the descriptive elememt, you soon lost yourself in the storyline and well developed characters which added to the enjoyment of the novel.
A quite engrossing yarn which in places required a double read to take in all that was occurring simultaneously.
I loved the three main characters and how they developed throughout the story , as much as I loved the intense description of each scene as the story progressed to a climatic conclusion.

This is a wonderfully crafted story. The world is expansive and beautiful. The characters are very well written and they have some very good motivations. The villain also have something which drives him, not like a typical fantasy villain, who is against the protagonist just because he is supposed to be a villain. The author very nicely emphasizes the fact that a villain is not born a villain.

The protagonist was also very well executed but here I have a small little complain, the placement of the protagonist could have been better, it is by no means terrible, do not get me wrong; It was good but could've been better. In very few scenes, his placement in that scenario seemed off, an easy fix could've been reducing his importance in those scenes. Anyways, this is just me nitpicking and it could very well have been a 'me' problem.

Overall, I loved the characters, the world, the fantasy settings, all the fantasy elements and the motivation of the story. I am eagerly awaiting more from the author. If you want to read something enjoyable (which translates to typical fantasy!) go for this, you will not regret it. Much gratitude to the author for writing such a wonderful book for us readers.

    Thank you

This story follows in the footsteps of Lord of the Rings as a band of travellers go on a quest to retrieve the elements, battling orks, corrupt rulers and a warlock.

Cor, Brayleigh, Celeste and the Knight-Lord have all been brought together by circumstances and together they are looking for the first element. There is good interaction between Cor and Brayleigh as they get to know each other, and this provides some natural relief between some intense periods of fighting. The fight scenes are lengthy and quite detailed listing different manoeuvres and fighting styles. This allows Cor to demonstrate his prowess and the Knight-Lord to demonstrate his chivalry, leadership and loyalty.

In relation to the antagonist, I think I would have preferred one to add a sense of unity and continuity. However, it does demonstrate the impact on the people of the usurpation of power and greed. Also the abuse of the law and how absolute power leads to a self-perpetuating authority which stifles any dissent.

This book was interesting as it is more action than character driven and a lot of space is given to the fight scenes. Although the final battle brings the quest to an end, I don’t think it did it cleanly and I would have preferred something more definitive. I imagine this will appeal to fantasy readers and video gamers.

When a book is about a group of people going on a quest, encountering magical creatures and metaphysical phenomena, you can count me in. The world-building was good, but the story was more action-driven. I'd have liked to see some character development and growth throughout. Cor had so much potential. The end was also not as satisfying because of that.
