When it comes to Data Governance, it’s easy to assume there’s a universal approach: clear standards, defined roles, transparent policies. It may seem like these rules are equally effective across all sectors — but in practice, things work quite differently. Recently, our CDO Valentyn Vyntu shared in a column for Energoreforma what should be considered when implementing Data Governance in the banking and energy sectors — and why there’s no one-size-fits-all solution in this field. In the energy sector, according to Valentyn, the challenges stem from a wide variety of data sources, the need for real-time operations, the lack of historical data, and low data literacy across production departments. Often, data management processes don’t start as C-level initiatives but rather as local efforts addressing specific issues within individual teams. In banks, on the other hand, governance is a matter of survival: formalized roles, strict policies, and audit trails are regulatory requirements. The architecture is centralized, and data control is automated. However, one persistent challenge is the so-called shadow IT — informal Excel registries and local databases. That’s why Data Governance is not just about implementing standards — it’s a deeper transformation of how organizations manage data. After massive attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, one thing became clear: energy is the foundation of the country’s security and resilience. Without generation, transmission, and coordinated network operations, nothing functions — not hospitals, not water supply, not mobile communications. In such conditions, digital transformation becomes a key tool for ensuring the stability and efficiency of the energy system. This is the experience we shared at DOU Day — an event hosted by the country’s largest tech platform.
