The Global status report on road safety 2023 details the scale of global road traffic deaths, and progress in advancing laws, strategies and actions to reduce them around the world.

The fifth report in a series, it provides an overview of progress between 2010 and 2021, and sets a baseline for the United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030 target of halving road traffic deaths and injuries by 2030.

The report shows that the number of road traffic deaths has fallen slightly to 1.19 million per year, and that efforts to improve road safety are having an impact. Yet the price paid for mobility remains far too high, and urgent action is needed if the goal of halving road traffic deaths and injuries by 2030 is to be achieved.

Profiles are available for countries or territories who participated in the GSRRS 2023 data collection survey.

Questionnaire

Working version of the questionnaire used to collect country- and territory-level data from government-designated National data focal points. The questionnaire was adapted to a data collection platform that made its debut with the Global status report on road safety data collection -which went from September 2022 to August 2023.

Indicators

The Excel file contains data as presented both in the Global status report on road safety 2023: country and territory profiles, the stand alone profiles,  and the mobile application WHO ROAD SAFETY DATA.  These data pertain to the Member States and Territories that agreed to participate in the GSRRS 2023 data collection survey, one of the several data sources used for the report.

In addition to the indicators shown in the profiles, the Excel contains the 2023 update of the 2010 and 2016 WHO estimates for road fatalities (point estimates, lower and upper confidence intervals) and the corresponding fatality rates per 100 000 population.  For updates on the WHO-led road fatality estimations, please visit Global Health Estimates.

Note that the first row of the Excel contains variable names and the second row contains a text description summarizing content.  Countries are presented using their three letter ISO-code as well as their official WHO short name.

Any other data queries should be addressed to sam@who.int.
