We the Nuclear Free North is currently promoting two petitions that oppose nuclear fuel waste transportation and burial in NW Ontario, and has promoted several petitions in the past.

“Consent of All Along Transportation Route and Downstream”

Resolution: “We, the undersigned, citizens, residents and Indigenous peoples of Canada, call upon the Government of Canada to require the Nuclear Waste Management Organization to demonstrate that it has the consent of residents and communities, including First Nations and Treaty Organizations, along the transportation route and in the region of and downstream of the candidate repository site(s) before selecting a site.”

Spring & Summer 2024
Paper Petition to Canada’s Minister of Energy & Natural Resources
“Stop the NWMO’s Siting Process”

Resolution: “We, the undersigned citizens and residents of Canada call upon the Minister of Natural Resources to immediately direct the Nuclear Waste Management Organization to stop the siting process for their proposed deep geological repository for highly radioactive nuclear fuel waste.”

Environment North, Change.org + Paper Petition
“Stop the Disposal of Nuclear Waste in Northwestern Ontario”

Online petition, also distributed as paper petitions until 2023.
Resolution: “We, the undersigned, do not support the Nuclear Waste Management Organization’s nine-step selection process for a nuclear waste disposal site, and we strongly oppose having a Deep Geological Repository for high-level nuclear waste in Northwestern Ontario.”
Result: Over 12,000 online signatures, plus over 1,000 signatures on paper petitions

Fall 2022 – Spring 2023
Paper Petition to Government of Ontario
“Proximity Principle”

Paper petition for presentation to the Ontario Legislature.
Resolution: “We the undersigned petition the Legislative Assembly of Ontario to adopt the Proximity Principle with respect to the management of radioactive wastes and direct Ontario Power Generation to further their development of robust extended storage systems at or near the point of generation.”
Result: 2,134 signatures collected.
